Why Equipped?

Why Equipped College Consulting, LLC?

Equipped offers teens and their parents a step-by-step structure to the college admissions process. In the uncertain world of college admissions, my goal is to give you back as much control as is possible by increasing your knowledge of the admissions process and guiding you to submit the best college application you can submit. I structure my packages similar to that of a college course in order to best equip students for what comes after admissions. Scroll down to see how I do this.

Guiding students through the ups and downs of the admissions process is what I do, and I love doing it! But my “why” looks further into the student’s future. Remember, the ultimate goal is not to 'get in,' but it's actually to 'get out' by successfully graduating college!

When I was working as an advisor at a university in Memphis, TN, I saw first-hand that many students encounter difficulties on the road to graduation. When I spoke with them, I saw that their struggles often related back to their admissions process and (lack of) college knowledge and preparation. When students neglected to do careful research to find a college that best served their unique traits and attributes, not only did they struggle more academically and socially, but any additional challenges, such as not understanding the differences between high school and college, lacking responsibility, or being unsure of how to take initiative, were proving much more difficult to overcome.

A successful college experience often begins with the preparation done in high school. Junior and Senior years are stressful, and the admissions process has changed so much in recent years. Unfortunately, parents do not always know what they don't know. Teens often believe what they hear one person say on social media and accept it as fact. (In my experience, 90% of what I hear teens say on social media about college admissions makes me cringe.) Equipped College Consulting offers your teen a third-party trusted adult who is there in your teen's best interest while at the same time walking alongside your family as a partner and guide, equipping you both to make the best decisions for your teen's future.

As a result of these experiences, each of the college consulting packages I offer utilizes:

- Timely Insight & Matriculation Essentials (T.I.M.E.) -- my own curriculum that engages students (and their parents) in a discovery of the current landscape of college admissions and enrollment, including trends, results, and the why and how all of this will impact their own situation.

- A Three-sided Advising Model that mentors the student, teaches critical-thinking-while-writing skills, and guides students through increasing levels of responsibility throughout their admissions process.

- Consistent, Weekly Meetings from the time students start the application until all applications are submitted

See the Advising Framework page and the College Admissions Consulting page for more details!

In addition, strict ethical guidelines and expectations are always followed. To that end, I do not:

- Write a student's application or essays for them

- Make any final decisions for a student/family as to which colleges a student will apply to/ultimately attend

- Accept any compensation from families for the purpose of getting a student into a specific institution (This is not possible.)

- Accept any compensation from institutions for the purpose of bringing more applicants to their college (I'm completely independent from all institutions so that I can work in the student's best interest.)

- Permit a student to apply to only "reach" or "wild card" institutions, where their chance of acceptance is not likely

What Parents are Saying:

My son was very anxious about the college application process. You not only helped him to understand the requirements but also led him to discover himself; I think that’s the essence of college applications. My son is more positive, and confident. Your expertise, patience, and great coaching have been very helpful.
